They were begun just last year, when the profile republican NGOs decided to impact on the problem of the iodine deficit which is typical to the regions of Fergena valley in order to decrease the percent of the endemic goiter disease. At the same time, they didn’t ignore the hygiene and sanitary questions which are actual in the republic with its hot and dry summer. It was decided to increase the women and schoolchildren’s level of knowledge about the endemic goitrer, anemia, hygiene and sanitary by organizing seminars.
The Initiative of medical NGOs was supported by the Social initiatives support fund (SISF), which involved as the partners NGO ‘’Salomatlik plus ecology”, NGO ‘’Esculap’’, NGO ‘’Association of endocrinolog physicans’’, Embassy of France to Uzbekistan and others.
As a result of 3 month work under the project “Healthy mother – healthy child’’ there were held 240 seminars in Namangan, Andijan, Fergana, Kokand. Materials (visual aids and booklets concerning to topic of the project) that used during the seminars, were prepared by NGOs and Health institute under the Ministry of Healthcare of Uzbekistan in association with SISF. More than 12000 people were taught during this seminars. Assessment in 20 secondary schools of the Fergana valley showed that 95% of pupils learned the information during the seminars in full.
Thankful citizens of Kokand city with the support of SISF and NGO ‘’Women unity’’ organized the holiday named ‘’Health’’ in the Kokand city. There were sport competition presentation and exhibition under the subject, performance of stage singers. In the program of this holiday there were organized contests among the makhalla committees and polyclinic for the nomination of “The cleanest makhalla” and “The best medical teacher’’
But it was the first step for developing the one of five activities of SISF accomplishing in sphere of the Healthcare. And it was the first project in the way of achievement of the main aim – healthy mother-healthy child.
The project was very actual in the following year, and reason was report of WHO, which shows that the death among the children up to 5 age was high in Uzbekistan. According to WHO, it was managed to reduce only 1%, it means that our indicators are higher than in european countries. The reason is very obvious -mothers do not know how to take care of infants.
Partners of SISF in the realization of project “Healthy mother – healthy child-2’’ became Association of children doctors of Bukhara “Avitsenna” and “Salomatlik plus ecology”. It became clear after the conversation with young mothers that they were not informed about illness of infants. Girls and future mothers also were not informed about it. The principle reason is: there is no health education in the program of educational school, it was concerned traditionally “forbidden” topics for young girls between members of families, about concerning questions on reproductive health and traditional idea of the same, that information about similar childbirth they know after their marriage from their mother and mother-in-low.
In this way, they choosed seminars topics in the initial step of project. In order to teach profoundly they published brochures for young mothers in bringing up infants in the age of 1. This brochure was published 150000 copy with help of “NESTLE’’ (Switzerland). Also it is important to note that number of participants of “Healthy mother – healthy child-2 ’’ project increased from 12.000 to 18.0000 in 2008 and covered a lot of regions of Uzbekistan. Fergana valley, Bukhara, Kashadarya and Navoi regions were joined to the project. Duration of the project continued all year round not 3 month as in 2007.
15000 college students (teenage girls), future mothers, were attracted by the SISF and other partners. Seminars for college and lyceums students on topic ‘’Preparing teenage girls for being mother’’ were held in 6 regions of our republic. Lessons were conducted by experienced skillful trainers of NGO “Salomatlik plus ecology”. They prepared handouts named ’’Your happiness and health in your hands’’ and manuals for trainers “Basics of sex education”. Handouts and booklets were published with the help of ‘’GlaxoSmithKline’’ (Great Britain).
At the same time another partner of SISF – Association pediatrician of Bukhara region “Avitsenna” – conducted trainings for 3000 young mothers in order to raise their awareness on the subject. Seminars on same topic among experts and members of local Health Centers also were organized also were conducted.
